Hoi Polloi

I would really like to know why Hoi Polloi over at Clues Forum has choosen his handle. If you check out the wikipedia page on Hoi Polloi it is not an endearing term to describe the masses. To me it comes across like Hoi Polloi is controlled opposition and his handle is an inside joke like he is there to help the sheeple. I doubt that. Clues Forum does have good stuff but I don't buy Simon Shack and Hoi Polloi aren't controlled opposition.
