I think there is some serious truth to this in that you have to give up lives for Satanic sacraficial ritual where the person doesn't have to really die but the persona offered to Satan, the death is faked and they go under a new indentity. We saw this with Michael Jordan's dad having to be sacraficed (fake death, new identity, new location) and Jordan had to step away from the NBA for some time. Also I think the mob wanted him to let some others teams (Houston Rockets) win the NBA championships.
